Always enjoy seeing any reference to Pauline Oliveros! Came to know about her in college as a music major, mostly for her contributions to electronic music. I missed this obituary in the New Yorker - thanks for providing this additional piece of info as a woman artist. Her recipes for listening seem very timely.

Oh wow, that’s awesome. The music profs at both of my colleges — well, at least the composition/electronic music/musicology ones I interacted with — were all dudes, as were the majority of the students in those classes.

Oh, back then, same. There were maybe three women in my electronic/audio recording classes and maybe just a few more in my composition classes.

Also another fascinating parallel-lives moment here :). I’ve recently been going through bins labelled “20th century” to try to track down my college-era compositions. Not sure exactly what I would do with them, but the ones I have found definitely bring back memories.
